professor aqm badruddoza chowdhury or b. chowdhury is a Bangladeshi politician. he was deputy prime minister during the reign of ziaur rahman. he became foreign minister after the Bangladesh nationalist party (bnp) came to power in 2001. a few days later, in November 2001, he took over as president of Bangladesh. he is a well-known doctor. he is also a writer, essayist, playwright, presenter and speaker. he was forced to resign as president in 2002 following a controversial incident and later formed another political party, alternative Bangladesh.
early life
b chowdhury was born on November 1,1932 at his nanabari in comilla. [2] he passed his matriculation from the traditional st. gregory high school in dhaka in 1947 and intermediate from dhaka college in 1949. he then earned an mbbs degree from Dhaka medical college. badruddoza chowdhury received training in medicine from curfew and edinburgh in london. badruddoza chowdhury's father, the late kafeel uddin chowdhury, was an established and renowned lawyer. he was also a awami league leader and then provincial council minister. mr. b. chowdhury was born in his nanabari comilla. he spent his education at the traditional st. gregory high schooling dhaka, dhaka medical college and london, edinburgh and glasgow royal college. he passed secondary from st gregory's high school from secondary position in the merit list. he was later selected for higher studies abroad from Dhaka medical college.
mr. chowdhury started his career as the youngest professor in east pakistan at that time. he played a key role in healthcare and became popular in the late sixties as the host of the popular tv show "your doctor." he joined the government of chief military law administrator ziaur rahman as health advisor in 1977. inspired by nationalist ideology, he entered politics in 1979 as the founding secretary general of the bnp.
political career
the founder of Bangladesh nationalist party was general secretary. on april 15,1979, he was appointed deputy prime minister of the ziaur rahman government. he was then in charge of the ministry of health and family planning. dr. Chowdhury is a senior political and colorful political career. he was elected as member of parliament five times in the nomination of the bjp from his constituency munshi Ganj 1 seat(sirajdikhan-srinagar). during his five-time reign in the bnp, he served in important ministries like health and family planning, education, science and technology, culture and foreign affairs. after the victory of the bnp by a landslide victory in the 9th parliamentary elections, he took over as the ministry of external affairs and later took over as president on 14 November 2001 and continued in charge until his resignation (June 21, 2002). after his resignation, he formed a new political party called alternative section Bangladesh and took over as its president. he is currently in charge of the post.
political career, 2001-2006
on june 21, 2002, he resigned as president under pressure from other leaders within the party. he was accused of disrespecting bnp founder ziaur rahman on his death anniversary the previous month without going to his shrine. he then formed a new political party alternative clause with his son bnp party mp mahi b Chowdhury.
on may 30, 2002, on the death anniversary of former president ziaur rahman, the founder of the bnp, he decided not to visit ziaur rahman's tomb as president from neutral. his move sparked anger among bnp leaders. many bjp leaders accused him of treachery. a motion of impeachment against him was also being planned in parliament. he met bnp president khaleda zia at her residence on june 21 and decided to resign under growing anger and growing pressure within her party. dr. chowdhury also resigned from bnp after resigning as president. later, his son mahi b chowdhury and another bjp mp m a mannan, who were elected from munshiganj-1 seat, resigned from parliament. in march 2004, at the initiative of b. chowdhury, they formed a new political party called alternative section bangladesh. b chaudhary took over as party president and ma mannan secretary general. the party won munshiganj 1 seat in the bypoll. the party won 2 seats under the grand alliance in the last 11th parliamentary elections.
personal life and
dr chaudhary is married to hasina warda chowdhury in her personal life. he is the father of a son and two daughters. his son mahi b chowdhury is a young political and tv personality. his eldest daughter muna chowdhury is a barrister and younger daughter shaila sharmin chowdhury is a doctor by profession. mr. chowdhury won the country's highest civilian medal freedom medal in 1993 in recognition of his contribution to politics and social development. he also won the Bangladesh television award in 1977 as the best tv presenter.
