Bearded Woodpecker Drumming in Kruger 🪵🪶 Rare September Sighting on the S25 with Real Bird Call

There is a certain thrill to hearing that sharp, rhythmic “drumming” echo through the bushveld. It stops you in your tracks. That is the call of a Bearded Woodpecker (Dendropicos namaquus), one of Kruger’s most distinctive and underrated birds. This slideshow was filmed during a cool and overcast September morning along the S25, one of my favourite birding dirt roads in southern Kruger.

The sighting began with a female woodpecker that seemed almost curious, hopping along the trunk and branches of a marula beside the road. It felt as if she was following us, watching from tree to tree. Her black and white markings stood out clearly against the grey light. That is the first image in this slideshow and one of my most memorable birding moments on that stretch.

The Bearded Woodpecker is the largest woodpecker in Kruger and one of the easiest to identify. The male has a bold red crown, but both sexes share that sooty black face and heavy build. You will often hear them before you see them. Their call is a piercing "kik-kik-kik" followed by a fast roll of hollow drumming as they hammer away at tree trunks looking for beetle larvae and insects.

You can hear both the drumming and the bird call in this video, recorded from my own custom Kruger sound archive. These are real moments, never playback, and captured respectfully on-site. I often track woodpeckers by sound, whether walking in camp or cruising slowly in the car. The moment you hear that hollow tap, it is like tuning into a secret rhythm of the bush.

Two of the images used in this video are from Creative Commons and used under appropriate licensing. These additions help complete the story of this fascinating bird, whose camouflage and quiet nature often mean they are missed by many visitors. But if you stop, listen, and look carefully at the tree bark, you might just catch one in action.

This sighting was filmed on a Nikon Coolpix P900. The crispness and reach of this compact camera have served me well across many birding adventures, especially on misty mornings like this one when the light adds mood and subtlety.
