Mount Kailash, located in Tibet's remote western region, is one of the world's most venerated and enigmatic mountains, with great spiritual importance for many religions, including Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism, and Bon. These faiths typically regard this spectacular summit, which rises to an elevation of 6,638 metres (21,778 feet), to be the axis mundi, or the center of the universe. Pilgrims make the difficult journey to do the Kailash Kora, a ceremonial 52-kilometer (32-mile) circumambulation of the mountain that is thought to cleanse sins and bring spiritual enlightenment. This pilgrimage, which is sometimes completed on foot or by prostrating every few steps, is a tremendous act of dedication and faith.
