Have you watched Pose? Well you’re excused from class to catch up on your homework.

If you are up to date, you’ll know that Pose is monumental for its trans representation on TV, with the majority of the main cast played by trans actors.

But the history of trans actors playing trans characters is sadly very recent.

Let’s take a look and some notable examples.

The first openly trans woman to play a trans role in a television series was Alexandra Billings who played Davina in Transparent in 2014.

So, 9 years ago. Around that time there was also Tom Phelan, who appeared in the Fosters.

From there, we had Laverne Cox in Orange Is The New Black, which led to Laverne being the first trans actress to be nominated for an Emmy.

In 2015, Jamie Clayton played the role of Nomi in the Wachowski Sisters’ Sense8.

And then, this one’s not a ‘Television show’, but WAS nominated for a Primetime Emmy, the web series HerStory which was written by and starred Jen Richards along with Angelica Ross.

After 2016, there was a significant rise in trans actors in television, though we are far from where we should be.

But with shows like Pose, we’re making history as we speak.
