(26 Jul 2021) Wind whipped waves crashed against the shore under a heavy sky on Monday afternoon, around the Olympic surfing venue just outside Tokyo.
Typhoon Nepartak is on the way towards Japan, and athletes and organisers are waiting to see if and how it might affect the games.
So far, the competition at Tsurigasaki beach has continued, after a delay on Monday morning because of low tide.
Spectators are not allowed, because of COVID concerns, but a small group of locals gathered to watch from outside a fence at the edge of the venue.
The sister and wife of one of the Japanese competitors, Hiroto Ohhara, were among them.
"The waves are always like this when a typhoon comes, but they often become better when the typhoon's left, and I hope that's going to happen," Sari Ohhara, Hiroto's sister, said.
But it's not certain when Nepartak is going to make landfall, and the eye of the storm might be moving further away from the Olympic surfing spot.
As of Monday night, organisers are still hoping to get through their surfing schedule planned for Tuesday, which is expected to include the gold medal stages for both women and men.
At nearby Ohara port, fishing boats bobbed quietly in a typhoon shelter as an almost perfectly full rainbow was followed by a stunning sunset.
