The temperature profile for an extended surface is derived from a differential energy balance. Assumes temperature is only a function of the axial direction (i.e. large thermal conductivity, small characteristic length, relatively small heat transfer coefficient, which means a small Biot number)

This forms the mathematical basis for the analysis of fins.
