This week in the Literacy Voyage Program, Mr. MonRay and I explored Rainbow by Marion Bauer with our young readers at the Hudson Youth Center! 📖 We worked on identifying colors using ROY G. BIV and reinforced our learning with an exciting STEAM experiment that made rainbows come to life!

For our experiment, we placed cups of water in a circle, each colored with food dye. Then, we connected them with paper towels, and something amazing happened! Through capillary action, the colors traveled up the paper towels and blended, creating a full rainbow right before our eyes. 🌈

Beyond color recognition and scientific discovery, we focused on the early literacy skill of imagery. Imagery is the ability to create mental pictures based on words and descriptions, a critical skill in reading comprehension. As we read Rainbow, we encouraged children to visualize the colors, textures, and movements described in the book. Then, by watching the experiment, they could connect their mental images to real-world experiences, strengthening their understanding and making reading more meaningful.

Why is imagery important for early literacy? It helps children:
🔹 Enhance comprehension – They can picture what they read, making stories more engaging.
🔹 Expand vocabulary – Associating words with vivid images improves language skills.
