*Section 8 Housing (Housing Choice Voucher Program)* is a federal assistance program in the United States designed to help low-income families, the elderly, and disabled individuals afford decent, safe, and sanitary housing in the private market. The program is administered by local Public Housing Authorities (PHAs) and is funded by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD).

Under Section 8, eligible individuals and families receive housing vouchers that cover a portion of their rent. The amount of assistance is determined by the household’s income, size, and local housing costs. Participants typically pay 30% of their income toward rent, with the voucher covering the remainder, up to a certain limit. The voucher can be used for apartments, houses, or other private rentals that meet HUD standards.

There are two main types of Section 8 programs:

1. **Tenant-Based Vouchers**: These vouchers move with the tenant. Participants can choose any housing unit that accepts Section 8 vouchers and meets HUD’s safety standards. If they move, the voucher goes with them, allowing flexibility.

2. **Project-Based Vouchers**: These are tied to specific properties. Tenants who live in these units receive assistance, but if they move, the voucher remains with the property.

Due to high demand, waiting lists for Section 8 assistance can be long, and eligibility is based on factors like income, household size, and citizenship status. Section 8 plays a vital role in addressing housing affordability and helping vulnerable populations access stable living situations.
