This is a fantastic hike on the edge of the national park, full of vistas and nothing too crazy to climb and best of all it's a complete hidden gem, so none of the crazy crowds you would get on the most popular peaks, with equally good views.

Total length is just shy of 20km, with around 450m elevation gain, mainly at the start at the last part climbing lantern pike.

You set off from New Mills Central Station, up St Mary's Road, past the golf club and up along Broadhurst Edge past Shloh Hall. Then you clumb up via Far Slack to Coombe Tor, and walk along both sides of Cooombe Edge / Cown Edge. The views from up here are spectacular across to both Manchester and Kinder Scout. You can take time to enjoy the views and the escarpment below.

Then, after this, you make your way across Matley Moor to the finale of the hike, Lantern Pike. A short sharp climb up to the top and you are afforded wonderful 360 views across Bleaklow, Kinder Scout, Hayfield, Chinley Churn and down to New Mills. A truly wonderful view.

The hike then steadily descends into New Mills via Thornsett (or you could go along the Sett Valley Trail).

You come back into the town via the Torrs, and you can head back to the station easily, with a walk along the river.
