In 2005, a routine Transatlantic flight went horribly wrong in Toronto, Canada. A massive aircraft carrying over 300 people had flown into severe weather. What happened next media outlets labelled as a Miracle. Let’s delve into this Captivating story. In this video we’ll be looking at the aircraft involved, the flight itself and the airport in Toronto. This is the story of Air France Flight 358
August 2nd, 2005, Air France Flight 358 was flying a route from Paris to Toronto in Canada. On board are 309 passengers and crew.
The aircraft is an Airbus A340, a massive four engine long range aircraft that first took to the skies in the early 1990s. Though it boasted some very impressive technology like other airbus planes, the a340 didn’t sell as well as its competitors for a variety of reasons. For one it has less powerful engines in its early variants. Many consider the plane to be underpowered. In a world where Twin Jet planes could fly further than they ever had done in the past, airline’s began choosing not invest in four engine aircraft like this. It was more of a liability for what it was worth. More engines meant more maintenance and more money to operate.
Despite its limitations the A340 launched with some success and has had an excellent safety record having been involved in very few incidents in its years of operation, even now that plane has been gradually retired from airline fleets around the world. However of the few accidents the plane has been involved in, none are quite as notable as that of Air France flight 358.
The French national Airline was once one of the largest operators of the A340 first receiving the planes in 1993. The accident aircraft was one of the earlier models with the smaller less powerful engines.
