Abdul Sattar Edhi, 1928-eternity.
The richest poor man, Abdul Sattar Edhi, passes away today. When I first came across this news, I couldn't believe the words my eyes were reading.
My heart aches at the thought of it.
I am still in denial.
Edhi Sahab is no more.
The world's greatest humanitarian,
the world's greatest human
is.. is no more?
For the first time ever, I.. have no words. I can't find the words to justify, to even express what I'm feeling right now. My beloved country has, once again, been orphaned. It's true, if there's anyone - after Muhammad Ali Jinnah - worthy of the title of the 'Father of the Nation', it's this man.
The true personification of the word 'selfless', Edhi Sahab pledged his entire existence to serving his country; himself living in a two-room apartment. Filling the gaps left by the government, Edhi Sahab helped Pakistanis in need, in every way possible; along with running the world's largest ambulance service, the Edhi Foundation also operated free nursing homes, orphanages, rehabilitation facilities, clinics and shelters.
His last words sum up his life: 'mere mulk ke ghareebon ka khayal rakhna.' A great loss for Pakistan, a bigger loss for humanity, Edhi Sahab, you will be dearly missed.
Such was his generosity, that he could not leave without giving us one last gift: the chance to happily celebrate an Eid the Muslim Ummah was finally celebrating together, as one.
Let's honour his legacy by following his footsteps.
Be generous,
be kind,
be Edhi.
Lastly, I would like to share a few lines, penned by my brother, as a tribute to Abdul Sattar Edhi.
Kya samjaon main pareshani meri
Khuda ne to woh lafz bhi na diye
Jinse bayan karpaon kahani tere
Ke tu tha woh,
Jo sunna asmaan ne
Ke tu sirf dekhe ga ek akhri chaand
Toh kardiya usne elaan
Jane wala hai mera mehboob
Anne wali Eid toh manayega ab usse milke sara jahan
Ke tu tha woh,
Waqt-e-ruksat hi teher gaya
Tere ethraam mein
Ke mil ley tu unse
Azeez hain tujko jo iss jahaan mein
Sunna hai ke tere ane ki khabar se
Aaj jannat main hai khili ek nayi bahar
Kya tere banane wale ko bhi tha
Bari besabri se tera intezaar.
We're not very fluent in our Urdu, so, please excuse any errors the poem (above) may have. I've attached his thought process, as he narrated to me, below.
I'm saddened by your passing
and I don't have the words
to be able to explain to the world
who you were
so that they can understand my sadness.
Because you were the one
where when the moon heard
that you were passing
it declared
since this is your last Eid,
the whole world will be celebrating it as one.
And you were the one
for whom death itself held in waiting
to allow you the time
to spend with your loved ones.
