I'd looked at playing Tewkesbury Park a few times before but with work and tee time availability, I'd never quite managed to get here. A lovely spring day was promised, work was favourable and a nearby course played earlier in the morning, everything finally aligned perfectly and I found myself arriving at the very pleasant Tewkesbury Park around lunchtime on a hot sultry spring day.

The course and hotel complex is located on top of a hill, overlooking the wonderful town of Tewkesbury and providing super views of the majestic Tewkesbury Abbey and the Cotswold hills to the east. The hill partly defines the course with both loops of nine descending from their elevated starting positions and integrating various rises and falls into many of the holes, setting it apart from many flatter parkland layouts. The grounds Tewkesbury Park is set in, is what was the deer park for Tewkesbury until 1770, and as such features a huge number of mature trees which define many of the holes here. This also gives the course its name of The Deerpark.

With the sustained period of good weather, the course was in excellent condition with the fairways being lovely and firm, yet still green and giving good lies. The greens similarly were very good with nice pace and enough moisture in them to stop the ball with well struck shots. The layout throughout is good, with well thought out hazards on many holes and of course the natural obstacles in the form of wonderful mature trees which double as natural barriers on many of the holes. The oak trees here are particularly spectacular and playing when I did, were leafed up and looking at their finest. A real treat for me, who always loves a mighty oak tree!

With the heat and 18 previous holes in my legs already, I gradually flagged throughout the round but it didn't detract from the course which I found really enjoyable and a good fair challenge. I only spoke to a single member on my way round who was glowing when talking about the course and mentioned how well it drains, a real positive given the course is so close to the Severn, and also susceptible Tewkesbury is to flooding. The welcome in the clubhouse was warm and friendly and the clubhouse bar doing good business in the warm afternoon sunshine.

Overall, Tewkesbury Park is a super course with a well designed 18 hole layout. There is also a 9 hole course here (The Oaks) as well as all the hotel facilities with spa, fitness and restaurants on site. Definitely a recommend from me and well worth adding to your list.
