Our first time hot tent camping! 🏕️❄️

We wanted to keep going on outdoor adventures throughout the winter season, and wow did we get the full experience. It was a blast, but also very cold. It was that crunchy snow, frozen breath, inching close to zero degrees kind of cold. It was challenging in ways we didn’t fully expect, and a little scary for a first time. It definitely explained why we were the only people out in the mountains this time of year! We’re huge Outdoor Boys fans, and this trip gave us a whole new level of respect for the kind of camping he does.

For a while, everything was going smooth. The stove was working, the tent was warm, and we were feeling pretty confident about the setup. Then around 10pm, smoke started flooding the tent and we couldn’t figure out why. I frantically opened the tent doors and aired everything out more than once. This went on for about three hours. That definitely pushed us closer to survival mode than I’d like 👀 Especially when you realize there’s always a chance the car might not start if something goes wrong, and the nearest town isn’t exactly close.

Turns out the chimney flue clogged at the top because of the small hole vents. It wasn’t until the second time I smacked it with a stick that it finally cleared out. This took longer than I’d like to admit to figure out. Lesson learned. Those vents are absolutely getting drilled out before our next trip so that doesn’t happen again!

We practiced with the stove three times before this trip, but I guess you really can’t plan for everything.

Sleeping brought its own surprise. We brought a queen blow up mattress and a quilt rated for -20°, but forgot one key thing. Insulation between you and the mattress. You could feel the cold being pulled out from underneath almost immediately. Next time, sleeping bags are going under the quilt, or a foam pad.

Some hard lessons were learned, but we’ll be back out soon enough 😊
