What is knee replacement surgery? & How It Performed.?
Knee replacement surgery, also known as knee arthroplasty, is a surgical procedure used to replace a damaged, worn, or diseased knee joint with an artificial joint (prosthesis) made of metal, plastic, or a combination of both. This procedure is typically performed to relieve severe pain and improve function in individuals with advanced arthritis or significant knee joint damage.

The surgery is performed under general or spinal anesthesia and usually takes a few hours to complete. Here's a general overview of how knee replacement surgery is performed:

Preparation: Before surgery, the patient is typically evaluated by the surgeon to assess the severity of the knee condition and determine if knee replacement is necessary. Pre-operative tests, such as blood tests and imaging studies, may be conducted.

Incision: The surgeon makes an incision over the knee to access the damaged joint. The size and location of the incision may vary depending on the specific technique used and the patient's anatomy.

Resection: The damaged portions of the knee joint, including the damaged cartilage and bone, are carefully removed. This may involve removing the ends of the thigh bone (femur) and shin bone (tibia), as well as reshaping the underlying bone to accommodate the prosthetic components.

Implantation: The artificial joint components, including metal implants for the femur, tibia, and sometimes the patella (kneecap), are securely attached to the remaining bone surfaces using special bone cement or techniques that promote bone growth into the implant surface (uncemented implants).

Closure: Once the artificial joint is in place and the knee is tested for proper range of motion and stability, the surgeon closes the incision using sutures or staples. A sterile dressing is applied to the surgical site.

Recovery: After surgery, the patient is monitored closely in the recovery room before being transferred to a hospital room or discharged home. Physical therapy and rehabilitation are typically initiated soon after surgery to help restore strength, flexibility, and function to the knee joint.
