Join me for a scenic walk from the heart of Leeds city centre at City Square all the way to the historic Kirkstall Abbey!

The journey begins by the side of the River Aire before we cross over to the serene Leeds and Liverpool Canal. I follow the canal's tranquil towpath for a significant part of the route, enjoying a peaceful escape from the city hustle, before making the final approach to the Abbey itself.

The Route Highlights
The Leeds and Liverpool Canal is the longest single canal in Great Britain, stretching 127 miles. It was completed in 1816 and was a vital artery for transporting goods like coal, textiles, and limestone during the Industrial Revolution. Today, its towpaths offer fantastic routes for walking and cycling!

Kirkstall Abbey is a ruined Cistercian monastery founded in about 1152. It was dissolved during the Reformation in 1539 but remains one of the most complete medieval Cistercian abbeys surviving in Britain. It's a magnificent and atmospheric place, set right on the banks of the River Aire.

The Return Journey
My original plan was to walk back along the main road, but time ran out! Instead, I hopped on a bus from Kirkstall to head back to the city centre.
