President Moon Jae-in has been stressing South Korea's aim of regaining wartime operational control from Washington as soon as possible.
We can't be sure if that will happen within his five-year term... but regardless, military authorities are moving to further speed up the process.
Our defense ministry correspondent Oh Jung-hee joins us in the studio.

OPCON transfer.
What's Seoul's stance on this?

South Korea handed over its operational control to the U.S. during the Korean War from 1950 to 1953... and took back its **peacetime operational control in 1994.
But the transition of wartime operational control had to be postponed as nuclear and missile threats grew from the North.
Now, in the case of conflict, the control over the South Korean military is automatically passed to the Commander of the South Korea-U.S. Combined Forces Command,... who's now an American general.
So that leads to the view that Seoul lacks military sovereignty... or is too dependent on the U.S. security commitment.
The Moon administration aims to take OPCON back from Washington by the early 2020s -- three or four years earlier than the original plan of the mid-2020s -- so that South Korea can be more **responsible for its national security, and strengthen its military power.
The government says Seoul's alliance with Washington will stay ironclad as ever, but it will be **Seoul that leads the two countries' combined forces, not Washington, once the OPCON is handed over to South Korea.
