On September 23, 2025, I caught Metra F40PH-3 #177 powering an outbound Union Pacific North Line train departing Ravenswood Station in Chicago, bound for Highland Park. This iconic EMD rebuild, part of the backbone of Metra’s locomotive fleet, delivers the classic look, sound, and performance that railfans across Chicagoland know and love.

The F40PH-3 series began life as Metra’s original fleet of F40PH locomotives, later rebuilt with modern electronics, Caterpillar-powered Head End Power (HEP) generators, and upgraded traction systems. With nearly system-wide assignments, these units remain some of the most photographed and recognized passenger locomotives in the Midwest.

The Union Pacific North Line (UP-N) is one of Metra’s busiest and most historic routes, stretching from Chicago’s Ogilvie Transportation Center to Kenosha, Wisconsin. Along the way, trains pass through Chicago’s North Side, suburban communities, and scenic stretches along Lake Michigan. Ravenswood Station, a key North Side hub, provides excellent train-watching opportunities as both inbound and outbound trains stop here throughout the day.
