Join the Goldring/Woldenberg Institute of Southern Jewish Life (ISJL) on Tuesday, December 21, for an exploration of the little-known history of Jews in the scrap metal business. Scrap metal recycling was a common career path for many Eastern European Jews who arrived in the United States in the 1880s and 1890s. Fueled by the changing consumer habits and business practices brought about by the Industrial Revolution, by the early 20th century scrap recycling was a profitable business dominated by small, Jewish-run firms. The industry boomed with the advent of World War I and World War II, and continued to change along with evolving environmental regulations into the late 20th century. The story of scrap is a story of the southern Jewish immigrant experience and the story of American capitalism—and there's even a Jewish superhero in the scrap business.

We're talking to Mississippi Jews who have been in the business for generations, and sharing the work of scholars concerned with the social and ethnic history of scrap.
