Today’s video will be all about the full liquid diet.
We’ll talk about what the full liquid diet is, what results you can expect, and whether it is worth it for you.
Many of you watching this may have heard about the clear liquid diet.
This is rather restrictive and only allows dieters to drink things like water, tea, and broth.
A full liquid diet has some more flexibility, including foods that are liquid or will turn to liquid at room temperature.
This provides more nutrition than a clear liquid diet and helps your body heal from a procedure.
Doctors will recommend someone go on the liquid diet if they are:
- Preparing for a test or medical procedure
- Recovering from surgery, especially bariatric surgery
- Having difficulty chewing and swallowing
Most will only be on the diet for a short period, generally somewhere between five days to two weeks.
Foods in the liquid diet contain little to no fibre or protein, which helps give your digestive system a break.
To get in all of your calories and nutrients, you’ll likely need to ‘eat’ more than three standard meals per day.
Eating 6-8 meals per day is generally recommended, mainly made up of strained or blended foods.
A liquid multivitamin is also a solid way to ensure you’re getting the proper nutrition.
When looking to increase your caloric intake, look to include full-fat dairy or high-calorie supplement shakes.
Here is a sample day of eating for someone on the full liquid diet.
Breakfast of 1 cup of hot cereal thinned with whole milk, accompanied by half a cup of fruit juice.
A morning snack of half a cup of a supplement beverage and half a cup of custard-style yoghurt.
Lunch consisting of 2 cups of soup, half a cup of tomato juice and 1 cup of chocolate pudding.
An afternoon snack consisting of half a cup of a supplement beverage and half a cup of fruit juice.
Dinner consisting of 2 cups of soup, half a cup of blended oatmeal thinned with milk, and half a cup of lemonade.
And an evening snack consisting of 1 cup of a supplement beverage and half a cup of vanilla ice cream.
You should avoid any solid foods on the full liquid diet.
Stay away from raw, cooked, or canned fruit and veg that have the skin or seeds.
Other foods to avoid include:
- Mashed fruits and vegetables
- Nuts and seeds
- Hard and soft cheeses
- Ice cream with solids
- Whole cereals and other grains
- Carbonated beverages like sparkling water and soda
- Meat and meat substitutes
- And bread
If you’ve had stomach surgery, it’s also best to avoid consuming orange and other acidic fruit juices.
Before you attempt the full liquid diet, here are a few things you should know:
- A registered dietitian can really help planning your meals for this diet.
- Adding milk, water, salad dressings, and mayo can moisten foods to make for easier blending.
- Try to get in 64 ounces of liquids per day, remembering that feeling full is a sign to stop drinking.
- If you’re on this diet for over 5 days, nutritional supplements are a good option.
- You may rapidly lose a significant amount of weight on the full liquid diet, the majority of this will be water weight.
- If you experience fever, diarrhea, vomiting, or abdominal pain, you should contact your doctor ASAP.
Realistically, this is intended as a short-term diet for someone either preparing for or recovering from a medical procedure.
If you’re looking to lose consistent long-term weight, I think there are definitely better options out there.
