In 1994/95 Whelen released a line of HID (High Intensity Discharge) rotating warning lights made by retrofitting their dual rotating reflector design. This reflector was already in use in the Rota-Beam RB6D and in the Austin Electronics version of the Advantedge lightbar. The HID bulb directly replaced the snap-in halogen bulb in both these products and used a potted ballast. Whelen claimed increased light output, better bulb life, and superior durability among other things. While I am impressed by Whelen taking risks and trying new designs, this product line was not very successful and halogen "rollback" kits were offered 4 years later. The bulbs take time to warm up to full brightness and the extra parts were an issue. Anyone who has ever "hit the overheads for a second" knows a 10 second warm up for a lightbar isn't a great idea. LEDs were not far away when these came out and strobes were reaching their peak effectiveness. Overall this was an interesting but unsuccessful venture that stands as an example of Whelen experimenting with technology in an attempt to offer the best and brightest products in the industry.
