This video shows the complete transformation of a mature, decades-old avocado tree that once produced poor-quality fruit.

The tree was grown from seed over 70 years ago and had never been grafted. It grew to nearly 50 feet tall — but the avocados were low quality and not worth keeping. The solution? A bold reset. The tree was cut back aggressively to just 4–5 feet, leaving only stumps behind.

I explain why cutting back a mature seed-grown avocado tree can be the best possible foundation for grafting, then fast-forward six months to reveal the results.

Using the tree’s powerful, established root system, I grafted five premium avocado varieties onto the new shoots:
Reed, Fuerte, Nabal, Hellen, and Hass.

All grafts took successfully and grew aggressively. The tree now carries varieties that mature at different times of the year, meaning it will eventually hold avocados nearly year-round — a dream setup for any avocado grower. Even more impressive, the grafts already have flower buds, meaning fruit will follow less than a year after the cutback.

I also explain how and why I performed maintenance pruning to balance the growth of stronger varieties like Hass and Hellen so they don’t overpower the others.
