In a strategic move to expedite the development and certification of indigenous aero-engines, the Gas Turbine Research Establishment (GTRE), a premier laboratory under the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), has submitted a proposal to the Ministry of Defence (MoD) to utilize two Indian Air Force (IAF) Su-30 MKI aircraft as flying test beds (FTBs).
According to sources, this initiative aims to fast-track the evaluation and validation of critical engine components and systems, paving the way for their integration into India's indigenous fighter jet programs, such as the Tejas Mk-2 and the Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA). The proposal, detailed in a report, outlines a comprehensive approach to testing, certification, and risk mitigation, aligning with India's goal of achieving self-reliance in defense manufacturing under the Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative.
