In today’s edition of World At A Glance, major geopolitical developments are unfolding across Asia, the Middle East, and Africa. Chinese authorities have announced the return of 1,178 nationals suspected of telecom fraud from Myanmar’s Myawaddy region, transported through Thailand as part of a joint China–Myanmar–Thailand crackdown. Since February, more than 6,600 Chinese nationals accused of involvement in cross-border telecom scams have been repatriated, signalling an aggressive attempt to dismantle transnational criminal networks operating along Southeast Asia’s lawless border zones.
In Europe, Elon Musk’s platform X has been fined 120 million euros by the European Commission for violating transparency rules under the Digital Services Act (DSA). The ruling marks the EU’s first-ever non-compliance decision under the law. Musk’s fiery response—that the EU “should be abolished”—has triggered a fresh debate on digital sovereignty, free speech, and the future of EU tech regulation.
Meanwhile, Syria is marking one year since the fall of Bashar al-Assad. Military parades across Aleppo, Damascus, and Latakia celebrated the anniversary of his ouster. Assad fled to Russia a year ago, paving the way for Ahmed al-Sharaa’s new administration, which claims to be rebuilding the war-torn nation.
In West Africa, Benin faced a serious threat to democratic governance after President Patrice Talon confirmed a coup attempt by soldiers. Gunfire erupted across several neighbourhoods before mutinous troops briefly appeared on state TV claiming they had removed Talon from power. The failed coup adds to rising instability in a region already shaken by military takeovers in Niger, Burkina Faso, Mali, Guinea, and Guinea-Bissau.
