Описание к видео Rising seas increase coastal erosion, coastal damage from storms, and the risk of coastal flooding.

A prolific author and inspiring speaker, Gary is highly regarded in academic, technical, and policy communities for addressing topics in coastal hazards, erosion, and sea-level rise. Gary’s contributions demonstrate how important it is for universities to be connected to their communities by contributing basic and applied research to public-private partnerships and shepherding interdisciplinary efforts to address society's most pressing challenges.

Gary Griggs, Distinguished Professor of Earth and Planetary Sciences, has been a valued member of the University of California, Santa Cruz community for more than 50 years. Gary's skills in the classroom are legendary, having inspired more than 15,000 students in oceanography, hydrology, and coastal geology. Gary has supervised 78 graduate students, helping to launch numerous successful careers in research, public service, resource management, teaching, business, and the law.

Gary led the Institute of Marine Sciences for 26 years, greatly expanding its scope and impact, and developing the UC Santa Cruz Coastal Sciences Campus into a regional and national center of research excellence and community engagement.

Sea Level Rise:
Global warming and climate change are driving sea levels to rise, leading to more frequent and intense tidal flooding.

Scientists predict that global sea levels could rise by several meters by the end of the century, depending on future greenhouse gas emissions. As Earth has cooled and warmed, glaciers and ice caps have advanced and retreated, and sea level has risen and fallen. As global temperature changes over time, sea level reflects that. Sea-level rise is a major hazard in many places. The earth's lowest country with average ground elevation of 4 feet 11 inches; Highest point is less than 8 feet.

This phenomenon, also known as high-tide flooding or nuisance flooding, occurs when sea levels rise above normal high tide levels, inundating low-lying areas.

The Union of Concerned Scientists (UCS) is a national nonprofit organization founded more than 50 years ago by scientists and students at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Our mission: The Union of Concerned Scientists puts rigorous, independent science into action, developing solutions and advocating for a healthy, safe, and just future.

"Encroaching tides" refers to the increasing frequency and severity of tidal flooding in coastal areas, particularly due to rising sea levels caused by climate change.

Today, we are a group of nearly 250 scientists, analysts, policy experts, organizers, and communicators dedicated to that purpose.

The Gary Griggs Endowment for Student Research Support in Earth Sciences enables research and
professional development for students completing degrees in Earth and Planetary Sciences and
Environmental Science at both the graduate and undergraduate levels. The Griggs endowment preserves capital and generates interest directed to promising students.
