Part 1: • Purple nutsedge (Cyperus rotundus) - ...
#Dlium Nut grass or purple nutsedge (Cyperus rotundus) is a species of plant in the Cyperaceae, annual herb, erect, up to 140 cm high, leaves sprout in rows of three from the base for a length of 5-20 cm, ribbon-shaped, sharp tip and green in color.
C. rotundus has inflorescences with stalks, triangular cross-section and are green in color. The inflorescence has three to eight unequal spikes. Bisexual flowers, 3 staminates and pistils have three stigmas. The fruit is an achene and is three-cornered.
The initial stage forms white fleshy rhizomes, 25 mm long and in chains. Some rhizomes grow upright above the ground, then form tuber-like structures from which new shoots and roots grow. Other rhizomes grow horizontally or downwards and form reddish-brown tubers or chains of tubers.
This species grows well at a temperature of 24-32C, rainfall 500-3,000 mm/year, elevation up to 800 meters, pH 5.5-7 and prefers wet sandy loam soil.
This plant contains cadalene, cyprotene, flavonoids, sesquiterpenes, terpenoids, mustakone, isocyperol, α-cyperone, rotundene, valencene, kaempferol, luteolin, quercetin, patchoulenone, isopatchoulenone, sugeonyl acetate, cellulose triacetate and sugebiol.
These plants are an important source of carbohydrates in tropical regions for modern hunter-gatherers and in times of famine in some agricultural cultures. Traditional medicine uses this plant for fever, digestive system disorders, dysmenorrhea, treating nausea, inflammation, reducing pain and relaxing muscles. The antibacterial properties of the tuber may help prevent tooth decay.
