The Institute of Post-Graduate Medical Education and Research and Seth Sukhlal Karnani Memorial Hospital, colloquially known as P G Hospital or SSKM Hospital

SSKM hospital is a Medical School and government hospital and a national research institute of West Bengal,  and currently the best super-speciality hospital in eastern India.

This hospital is Located in the heart of Kolkata near Race Course ground and the Victoria Memorial Hall. It's location is  surrounded by cultural and historical landmarks like the Nandan complex, Rabindra Sadan, Academy of Fine Arts, Saint Pauls Cathedral, Red Road and Indian Museum. It faces towards Maidan of Kolkata which is a hot-spot for political rallies in the city. The Bangur Institute of Neurosciences is adjacent to this institution.

The Council of Fort William constructed this hospital Way back in 1707 in the premises of the Old Fort at Gerstein Place. The Presidency General Hospital was initially known as PG Hospital till and in 1954 The naming was done to commemorate the name of the great donor Sukhlal Karnani Seth.

PG Hospital was honoured to be the first Post Graduate Medical Institute in Eastern India in 1957.

The institute was inaugurated by Pandit Jawahar Lal Nehru, the then Prime Minister of India, on 16th January, 1957.

Today, the institution is best known for the study of undergraduate, post graduate and post doctoral level medical courses, specialist medical degrees and diplomas, para medical courses, nursing courses

Academic building is in the heart of hospital campus. The hospital premises contains various outpatient departments, wards and clinics, the administrative and college buildings. The teaching buildings  housing lecture theaters, museums and laboratories.

OPD registration card can be obtained by paying Rs. 2.00 at the various OPD Registration counters located in various places of the Hospital for consultation in general/speciality OPDs.

Investigations for OPD patients are done free of cost for all patients as per Government of West Bengal notification.

All urgent investigations like Blood Biochemistry, Urine, Blood gas analysis, ECG, USG, X-ray are available for casualty patients round the clock.

Facilities for CT Scan and MRI are also available in the hospital campus.

All medicine and surgical items available in the Casualty are provided free of cost.

The hospital has MRI, CT Scan, Dexa Bone Mineral Density Scan, Digital Xray, ultrasonography and other imaging facilities.

In order to provide low cost medicines and devices like pacemakers, stents, orthopaedic implants etc for patients, the Govt Of West Bengal opened fair price medicine shops under the PPP model. It provides drugs and devices at a discounted rate of upo 67%.

The hospital has 14 major operation theatres for major surgery and 3 minor OTs.
