The People’s Democratic Organisation for Independence and Socialism (PDOIS) has adjourned its national congress in a dramatic demonstration of principle, with its Secretary General, Hon. Halifa Sallah, declaring the party’s conscious choice to respect the law even when it could defy it.

The decision, announced to a crowded hall, came down to a matter of quorum and legality. Sallah revealed that while the party had the numbers and will to proceed with its agenda, doing so would have violated its own internal regulations.

“We have made a decision that, even though we can proceed against the law, we will respect it to wait for those who would make us to be lawful in our party,” Sallah stated emphatically, a message he repeated for emphasis. “That is what we want you to tell people.”

Framing the adjournment not as a setback but as a foundational act of nation-building, Sallah delivered a profound lesson on constitutionalism and equality. “Be assured, when we respect the law, we become equal under it,” he said. “But once we start to be above the law, then all of us ultimately will be under dictatorship. We prefer to be under the law so that we can become equal under the law and become a nation.”

He underscored that the integrity of the process was paramount, stating, “Since we are building a nation we must start from each of us… if one person is missing, and by proceeding will break the law, that one person matters. We wait for that person to join us for us to move forward.”

Addressing the gathered members, Sallah acknowledged the inconvenience but reinforced the inspirational purpose of the act. “There is a crowd here. We could have proceeded and do whatever we want. But we don’t want to do whatever we want. We want to do what we should do,” he asserted.

He urged members to leave inspired, carrying the message that PDOIS respects the laws it creates for itself, hoping this standard would ripple outward to the nation. “We hope each of you will tell those outside that we were here trying to serve a nation but were not equal in... It is late. Many people are not used to it. So we can understand but we must remain inspired to inspire others.”

The congress has now been rescheduled for January 24, 2026. Sallah concluded with a forward-looking vision, linking the party’s disciplined action to the nation’s awakening: “We hope that you will leave this hall inspired so that on the 24th when we return, it is PDOIS again. The Gambian people arise. The Gambian nation arises and we are ready to move forward to shape the destiny of this country in order to ensure that we live in liberty, dignity and prosperity.”
