Peace & Justice Scotland Coordinator and XR Peace campaigner Brian Larkin speaking at the opening of Code Red: An exhibition of new works by photomontage artist Peter Kennard. Larkin reflects that Kennard's imagery, for which he created the seminal work during an Extinction Rebellion Peace blockade outside the Ministry of Defense in London, evokes the XR Peace message that "War causes climate change and climate change causes war", and on Kennard's re-appropriation of the photo of the earth taken by Apollo astronauts in 1972, combining it with images of industrial destruction, and devastation caused by fossil fuels and war; that his use of the "Atomic Clock" warns of imminent armageddon by nuclear war and climate catastrophe; and that Kennard's image of a gas mask spitting nuclear bombs imposed on the earth evokes the horror of the First World War and the atomic bombing of Hiroshima, linking militarism and the climate and ecological emergency.

Code Red is presented by Peace & Justice Scotland in partnership with Street Level Photoworks at Out of the Blue Drill Hall in Edinburgh from 6 - 26 November 2021, Monday - Saturday 10am - 5pm and is supported by National Lottery Community Fund and Jackarts. Free entry. Open to all. It is also presented at Gallery 103 (Tron 103) in Glasgow by Street Level Photoworks until 19th December 2021.
