Описание к видео A Talk With Editorial Cartoonists Graeme MacKay and Angelo Lopez - December 5, 2024

On Sunday, December 8, 2024, editorial cartoonists Graeme MacKay and Angelo Lopez had a conversation on the political issues facing Hamilton, Canada as well as Graeme's editorial cartooning career.

Graeme MacKay, born in 1968 in Dundas, Ontario, began his journey in an unexpected realm—behind the meat counter as a junior clerk. Yet, it was his creative spark that truly defined his path. While studying History and Political Science at the University of Ottawa, Graeme’s knack for humor and storytelling flourished as he contributed cartoons to the student newspaper, quickly becoming its graphics editor.

His career took a flavorful turn when he worked at Harrod’s in London, but after traveling through Europe and North Africa, he returned to Canada and landed a gig at The Hamilton Spectator in 1997. Since then, his biting wit and sharp observations have graced newspapers across Canada and occasionally found their way into the U.S., making him a beloved figure in the editorial cartooning scene.

Beyond his editorial work, Graeme’s accolades include serving as President of the Association of Canadian Editorial Cartoonists and winning prestigious awards like the Ranan Lurie Political Cartoon Award. A viral cartoon during the COVID-19 pandemic showcased his ability to capture the zeitgeist, illustrating the intricate dance of intellectual property in the digital age.

A history enthusiast, Graeme creates caricatures of political figures and marked his 20th anniversary at The Spectator with his debut book, "You Might Be From Hamilton If…". In 2018, he launched a nostalgic cartoon series featuring Ontario's Premier Doug Ford, blending satire with a touch of 70s and 80s flair.

Now based in Hamilton with his wife and two university-aged daughters, Graeme still enjoys grilling up a perfect steak, a skill that harks back to his meat-wrapping days—proof that sometimes, the most unlikely beginnings can lead to extraordinary journeys.
