(23 Jul 2016) As the International Olympic Committee meets to decide whether to ban Russia entirely from the Rio Games due to state-sponsored cheating, Moscow was marking the 60th anniversarry of the opening of
the Luzhniki Stadium.
The stadium first opened on 31 July 1956 and was the national stadium of the Soviet Union. It was also the main venue for the 1980 Summer Olympics that were hosted by Moscow.
A number of sports competitions took place outside the stadium on Sunday as part of the celebrations.
When asked about the IAAF's decision on banning Russian track and field athletes from this year's Olympics, the majority of Moscovites believed the decision was politically motivated.
One resident added that he thought the sport's governing body's move aimed to weaken Russia's leadership as it has "an independent foreign policy".
The IOC is due to announce its decision on Monday.
