Vast salt desert in Gujarat, India, 100 km from the Arabian Sea. Surreal saline mudflats extend to the India-Pakistan border.
Thousands of years ago, the Rann was a shallow arm of the Arabian Sea. Land uplift caused by tectonic forces then closed off the connection with the sea.
Known as the Rann of Kutch, this tortoise-shaped landmass is divided into two parts: the Great Rann, which covers 18,000 sq km, and the Little Rann, which comprises more than 5,000 sq km.
Towards the end of June, monsoon rains pummelled the Rann, flooding the region until October when the water slowly began to evaporate.
As the water recedes, migratory salt farmers begin setting up rectangular plots to start harvesting the salt crystals left behind by the evaporating water.
Kutch has diverse wildlife sanctuaries, incl. Kutch Desert Wildlife Sanctuary with “Flamingo City.” Kutch Biosphere Reserve (India) protects Great Rann & Little Rann; Pakistan’s Rann of Kutch Wildlife Sanctuary safeguards the northern part.
Shri Narendra Modi, as Gujarat’s Chief Minister, created Rann Utsav in 2006 for the barren land. Gujarat offers various tourist spots like the Statue of Unity, Gir National Park, Sabarmati Ashram, and Somnath Temple.
