On July 1, 1863, during the first day of the Battle of Gettysburg, a 24-year-old Union officer made a decision that changed the course of the battle—and possibly the Civil War itself.

This is the story of Rufus Robinson Dawes, the 6th Wisconsin Infantry, and the legendary Iron Brigade—the “Black Hat” soldiers who charged into the railroad cut and forced the surrender of hundreds of Confederates.

Outnumbered nearly 2-to-1, with Confederate forces under Joseph R. Davis entrenched in a fortified railroad cut west of town, Dawes refused to retreat. In just 15 brutal minutes, the 6th Wisconsin launched a bayonet charge that captured 200+ Confederate prisoners and stopped a breakthrough that could have collapsed the Union line on Day One at Gettysburg.

The fight took place along McPherson Ridge and the Chambersburg Pike, as Robert E. Lee’s Army of Northern Virginia pressed forward and Union forces struggled to hold their ground. With General John Reynolds killed early in the fighting, Dawes and his 442 men became the last reserve standing between Confederate success and disaster for the Union Army of the Potomac.

By the end of the day, the Iron Brigade had suffered devastating casualties—but they had bought the Union precious time to consolidate on Cemetery Hill and Cemetery Ridge. That time would prove decisive in one of the most important battles of the American Civil War.
