Combat Outpost Keating was built in the worst possible location—at the bottom of a valley surrounded by mountains on all sides. Every military officer who saw it knew it was a death trap. The enemy held all the high ground. Supply helicopters were sitting ducks. Patrols had to climb into ambushes. For three years, soldiers lived in what they called "a fishbowl" while the Taliban watched from above.
By 2009, American commanders finally admitted the obvious: COP Keating needed to be closed. The evacuation was scheduled for October 6th. But on October 3rd—just three days before they were supposed to leave—400 Taliban fighters launched a coordinated assault from three sides simultaneously.
What followed was 12 hours of the most brutal close-quarters combat of the Afghanistan War. Taliban fighters breached the perimeter and entered the base. Buildings burned. Americans fought room-to-room with insurgents at point-blank range. Two soldiers—Staff Sergeant Clint Romesha and Specialist Ty Carter—would earn the Medal of Honor for their actions that day, fighting through wounds to retake the tactical operations center and call in desperately needed air support.
8 Americans died. 27 were wounded. 150-200 Taliban were killed. And when it was over, the base was abandoned and bombed into rubble by American aircraft.
This is the story of the Battle of Kamdesh—the outpost that never should have existed, and the soldiers who defended it anyway.
