The US has provided 847 Patriot missiles, worth $3.26 billion, to Ukraine since Russia began its special military operation, according to Sputnik.

According to Sputnik, after including the Patriot air defense system in the $1.85 billion military aid package for Ukraine in December 2022, Washington has provided two more Patriot systems to Ukraine in subsequent military aid packages.

In addition, in late November 2024, the Netherlands announced the transfer of three Patriot missile launchers to Kiev amid Ukraine's massive missile and drone attacks from Russia.

However, even with many Patriot air defense systems, Ukraine still has to rely on interceptor missiles, such as the advanced MSE variant, to counter Russian attacks.

In June 2024, the US military signed a $4.5 billion contract with Lockheed Martin to produce Patriot PAC-3 MSE missiles and related equipment. That same month, US National Security Advisor John Kirby said that Ukraine would be given priority in the delivery of interceptor missiles as soon as they rolled off the assembly line.

Although the US did not specify the number of MSE missiles it had provided to Ukraine when announcing new military aid packages, Sputnik analysts pointed out that, when reviewing the annual budget report of the Department of Defense, the US had transferred at least 847 Patriot Advanced Capability-3 (PAC-3 MSE) missiles.

Accordingly, in the initial budget report, the US military only planned to purchase 252 MSE missiles for fiscal year 2023 and 230 MSE missiles for fiscal year 2024. However, with additional funding, the US could purchase 375 MSE missiles in 2023 and 472 missiles in 2024 for a total of up to 3.26 billion USD.

Patriot is manufactured by the US and is considered one of the most effective air defense systems in the world. One of the main points of the Patriot system is the ability to integrate with other air defense systems, creating a multi-layered defense network.

At present, the PAC-3 MSE missile is considered the most powerful version of the Patriot system. This missile has high speed, uses precise target search and destroy technology, allowing the interception of many airborne targets, such as: ballistic missiles, cruise missiles and fighter aircraft.

The PAC-3 MSE missile is 5.21 m long, weighs 312 kg, is equipped with a dual impulse engine, and can intercept incoming missiles at an altitude of 40 km and a flight speed of Mach 5.
