Australia's biggest iron ore miners Rio Tinto and BHP are joining forces with steelmaker Bluescope to fast track the production of green steel. Globally, steelmaking creates 8 per cent of the world's CO2 emissions. The partnership will create Australia's first iron-making electric smelting furnace, that will use renewable power, to make molten iron from low and medium grade ores that are mined in the Pilbara. Simon Trott, chief executive officer of Rio Tinto Iron Ore, says Australia risks losing its position as the world's largest supplier of seaborn iron ore if our miners can't find a way to produce less carbon intensive iron. Iron ore is Australia's biggest export, worth $130 billion last year.
