Kayaking the Dupage river with an old friend. Always plan your logistics when kayaking or canoeing a river. We met at the take out at Channahon State Park. We parked his vehicle there, then he rode with me and the kayaks to the put in at Hammel woods in Shorewood. This paddle is a distance of about 10 miles and will take about 3 hours. Usually in spring the Dupage runs a little fast with many riffles and some stretches of white water. This spring it was about 2 feet lower than usual and a little slower but still a fun paddle with a few stretches of faster water.
Most of the river has nice houses along the shore but some has natural areas. There were lots of birds as usual, including Egrets, swans and even an eagle sighting. also noticed many snakes in the water swimming and hundreds of huge turtles.
We also seen many big fish, probably smallmouth bass swimming in the clear water. We talked to a shore fisherman who had just released a huge smallmouth he had caught using a minnow. He said he fishes there a lot and there are many smallmouth bass.
Stay to the left shore as the take out nears or you will get swept over the dam. This is also where the historic I&M canal meets the Dupage river. They both meet the Des Plaines river a little further downstream and then flow into the Illinois river.
