We spent a week based in Alice springs and siezed to opportunity to spend some time exploring the MacDonnell Ranges (East and West of 'the Alice). We were previously here in 2012 bt had much less time to fully enjoy the experience.
The first day, we ventured out to Redbank Gorge and took in the sights of Mt Sonder, Glen Helen Gorge, Ochre Pits and Ellery Creek. The colour pallette of this region of Australia is out of this world!
(00:26) On the way, we revisited the site of Albert Namatjira's iconic painting of the twin gums. Only about 15km from Alice Springs and by the side of the road, it's easily accessible. When we were here in 2012, I captured an image which was my perspective of what Albert saw in the 1950's when he painted the scene. Sadly, the both gums are now remnants on the ground after the work of an arsonist(s) rendered the site unrecognisable.
We decided to bypass Ormiston Gorge on this occasion as we will return in a couple of weeks and stay out at the Gorge for a few days - because we can!
Day two, we headed west again but this time targeted The Finke River National Park or, more specifically, Palm Valley. The 16km drive into Palm Valley is simply spectacular surrounded by huge sandstone cliffs and formations. The place is a landscape photographer's dream. Needless to say, we took much longer than most to, 1) get there and 2) be there, with so much camera fodder at every turn.
Palm Valley is truly beautiful and not to be missed if you're ever in this part of Northern Territory.
Day three was a rest day to recover from the walks.
Day four, we ventured out to the East with an early start. Very cold! Well, for us North Queenslanders, it was. The car thermometer said 3 degrees but with the chill factor from the lazy breeze, I say "zero" would be closer to the money.
We stopped off at Jesse Gap, Emily Gap, Corroboree Rock and Trephina Gorge. At the latter, we took a 2km loop trail walk which took us up and around the ridge and down through the gorge, up the other side and eventually down again and along the creek bed. All very taxing on my tired knees. But I wouldn't have misse it for the world.
