VIRTUAL HYDLIDE remakes

Virtual Hydlide was an action RPG for the SEGA Saturn system and in spite (or maybe because) of its ambition to bring the original Hydlide world to life in 3D, it didn't really attain the success it aimed for.
Perhaps it was a bit too far ahead of the possibilities of the system as well as the programming team, but players usually cite the choppy animation and frame rate and all too linear game play as negative points and reasons to leave it alone.

However, when I played it around 2002, I quickly fell in love with the game's atmosphere and the freedom (at the time) of being able to run around. The way the game worked also meant that grinding was not necessary and one cóuld leave enemies alone and try to run past them to get to treasure (and powerful items) quick.
One thing in particular that worked for me was the music, which I recorded as I played along. It does sound a bit compressed, rough and dated though, and I decided to recreate a selection of tracks that I love.

The original sound track was composed by Japanese composer Yumi Kinoshita (now mrs. Sakata) and I would like to acknowledge her outstanding and imaginative work.
It was very interesting to peel the music apart, layer after layer, and reinterpret the melodies and harmonies as well as grappling with some quirky surprises in tempo and structure.
I did choose to simplify a few things, leaving out sequences I felt made it a bit too "cluttered" and added a little variation here and there, but overall I tried to stay as close to the original Saturn sound as possible.

I hope this will delight players and lovers of RPG soundtracks all over the world.
