RBI Slaps Penalties on HDFC Bank & Shriram Finance | What Went Wrong?

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has imposed monetary penalties on two major financial entities — HDFC Bank and Shriram Finance Limited — for violations of regulatory norms.

🔹 HDFC Bank has been fined ₹4.88 lakh for contravening foreign investment regulations while sanctioning a term loan to a client. The RBI had issued a show-cause notice, and after reviewing the bank’s written and oral submissions, it determined that a regulatory breach had occurred.

🔹 Shriram Finance was fined ₹2.70 lakh for non-compliance with the RBI Digital Lending Directions, 2025. The violation involved routing borrower loan repayments through a third-party account rather than directly crediting them to the company’s account — a practice that goes against RBI’s digital lending norms.

💬 The RBI emphasized that these penalties are strictly related to regulatory non-compliance and do not question the validity of the transactions or agreements entered into with customers.
