Customers are a large part of what keeps our business running. And while we wish all our clients were on our nice list, you will encounter some bad ones if you haven’t already. There are a few different criteria that can determine whether you are dealing with a good or bad customer.

Firstly, are they good communicators? A good client will clearly explain the project objectives as well as their vision and goals. While clients who don’t communicate their expectations, bad clients, will likely not like the outcome and hence require many more revisions. Based on my experience, I feel that these types of clients typically don’t know what they want, which can be cumbersome. The best way to achieve good communication from the client is not only verbally but to also get everything down in writing and have both parties read and agree to it. Much like a design brief for example which go overs all the clients objectives and then followed up with a contract which you prepare and have the client sign off on before beginning any work. The contract will summarize the design brief including each of the phases involved, what each party will provide, deadlines and terms of payment including milestones.

This brings me to my next point which is whether the client pays on time. Of course a good client will respect your defined terms of payment and ensure you receive payment on time, while a bad client is one which you have to constantly remind and ask them about the status of the overdue payment.

Then there are those clients who are price sensitive, and will likely try to negotiate your pricing and complain that your fees are too high. This is a headache you want to try to avoid as if someone discounts the value for your services, chances are you shouldn’t waste your time with them. Yes, that’s right you are allowed to refuse customers, but I’ll get to that shortly. Good customers will not question your fees or amount of time it takes to complete a project (for those who are charging by the hour instead of value-based).

And how does one choose the type of clients they want? By recognizing what makes a good client in your eyes, can be any of the criteria I mentioned or maybe something else, like maybe you place more value on your relationship with them over how long it takes them to pay. Once you recognize this you’ll be able to only accept the clients who you feel will make a good fit. I understand that for freelancers just starting out you’ll want to accept almost any client that comes your way, but as your business grows you’ll see that you’ll be able to start refusing clients who are not worth your time.

What makes a good or bad client for you? Let me know in the comment section below.
