In this video, I take a closer look at the Female Common Goldeneye, a fascinating species of duck found across the boreal forests of Scandinavia, eastern Europe, Russia, Mongolia, northern China, Canada, Alaska and northern USA.

The bird in this video was calmly diving for food together with here mate when I came to film. But being skittish the male flew away and only returned a few hours later.

I found a place next to the pond and took cover behind some bushes to not disturb the birds, and it was soon occupied diving for food once more and completely ignored me.

Habitat type:
Their habitat preferences, include calm, clear lakes and ponds, as well as shallow rivers and streams. The Common Goldeneye are usually found close to shore where the water dept is less than 10 m deep, and preferably in water up to 4 m deep. When breeding the species shows a preference for lakes void of fish but with abundant invertebrate life. And in the pond found here there is no fish but plenty of invertebrate and a few frogs.

Diet:
Predominantly of aquatic invertebrates such as molluscs, worms, crustaceans, aquatic insects and insect larvae (e.g. dragonflies, damsel flies and may flies).

Breeding site:
Hallow mature trees with a cavity diameters of c.20 cm is fine for nesting. It will also nest in artificial nest-boxes.

Size and weight:
Adult males ranges from 45–51 cm (18–20 in) - 1 Kg
Females range from 40–50 cm (16–20 in) - 800 g
Wingspan of 77-83 cm. (30.3-32.7 in)

Conservation status: Least Concern (Population stable)
