In 1939, at the height of the eugenics era in America, a dark psychological experiment took place in Davenport, Iowa — one that would haunt the field of speech pathology forever.

A group of 22 orphaned children, most of them poor and voiceless in society, were chosen for a secret study by Wendell Johnson, a renowned speech expert, and his graduate student, Mary Tudor.

The children were divided into two groups:

One group was praised and encouraged for their speech — even if they had stutters.
The other group, including children who spoke perfectly fine, were told they were flawed, that they had serious speech defects, and were criticized harshly every time they spoke.
The result?

Children in the second group became anxious, withdrawn, and developed real speech problems.
Some stopped speaking altogether.
Many were never the same again.

All this was done without consent, to vulnerable children with no families to protect them.

The researchers called it a “speech study.”
But when news of the experiment finally came to light decades later, horrified psychologists called it what it truly was:

The Monster Study.
No one was ever punished.
No apologies were given for years.
Some of the surviving children never overcame the psychological trauma.

This study is now held up as a warning — not just of how science can be misused, but how easily the most innocent can be destroyed in the name of “progress.”
