Adoptionism, at its heart, theorizes that Jesus Christ was born fully human and was later "adopted" by God as His Son. This adoption was typically believed to have occurred at a specific point in Jesus' life, such as his baptism, resurrection, or ascension, often due to his exemplary life and obedience. This view contrasts sharply with the orthodox Christian understanding that Jesus was the eternal Son of God, fully divine from the moment of his conception (or even pre-existent before his human birth).  

From the perspective of mainstream Christianity, which solidified its doctrines through ecumenical councils like Nicaea and Chalcedon, Adoptionism was deemed a heresy. This is because it denies the full and eternal divinity of Christ, suggesting that his divine status was conferred upon a previously human individual rather than being inherent to his very being from the beginning. This distinction has significant implications for the understanding of the Trinity, the nature of salvation, and the person of Jesus Christ.
