On May 13th, 2013 the St. Stephen's Jazz Combo (a group of elite musicians from the larger St. Stephen's Jazz Band) embarked on a musical journey 100 years in the past, in the days when recordings used no electricity, but instead sound waves.

The group recorded the popular New Orleans jazz tune "Joe Avery's Blues" in the fashion of a 1920s recording session, replacing bass or snare drum with chock cymbal and wood block, having no upright bass and placing the louder instruments farther from the horn and the softer closer. The results speak (or sing rather) for themselves.

trumpet
cornet
two alto saxophones
one baritone saxophone
one guitar
one piano
one drummer

Amazingly, this was the first and only take that needed to be waxed!

The recording was made on a 1906 Edison Standard Phonograph with 1905 Edison Recording head. The horn is a 36 in brass belled one from 1904 made in St. Louis. Special thanks to THEVICTROLAGUY for the superior blank!
