France’s national postal service, La Poste, and its banking subsidiary, La Banque Postale, were hit by a suspected cyberattack during the peak of the Christmas delivery season, causing widespread service outages and nationwide parcel delays. The disruption struck at one of the busiest times of the year, amplifying the operational and public impact.

The incident knocked large portions of La Poste’s information systems offline, leaving customers unable to access online services and forcing many to rely on physical post offices to send holiday mail. Affected platforms included the main La Poste website, the mobile app, Digiposte, Identité Numérique La Poste, and multiple online services tied to La Banque Postale.

While in-person postal and banking transactions continued, the outage significantly disrupted mail and parcel logistics across France. Reports indicate the disruption was caused by a distributed denial-of-service attack that temporarily overwhelmed La Poste’s systems. The organization stated there was no evidence of customer data being compromised.

La Banque Postale also took its online and mobile banking services offline as a precaution. Despite the digital outage, core banking operations continued to function, including payments, interbank transfers, ATM withdrawals, card transactions, and WERO payment services, limiting wider financial instability.

The attack follows a series of cyber incidents targeting French public institutions, raising concerns about the resilience of national infrastructure during critical operational periods. Even without data loss, the timing of the disruption highlights how denial-of-service attacks can cause significant real-world consequences.
