The upper side of the abdomen is patterned with orange and black bands. Two further identification characters are the presence of secondary black bands on the third and fourth dorsal plates and faint greyish longitudinal stripes on the thorax. Its color patterns may appear wasp-like to other animals, such as birds, protecting it from predation. E. balteatus can be found throughout the year in various habitats, including urban gardens, visiting flowers for pollen and nectar. They often form dense migratory swarms, which may cause panic among people for their resemblance to wasps. It is among the very few species of flies capable of crushing pollen grains and feeding on them[citation needed]. The larva is terrestrial and feeds on aphids. Hoverflies, sometimes called flower flies or syrphid flies, make up the insect family Syrphidae. Hover fly belong to a big family varying from small to large flies. They are among the most frequent visitors of flowers in the garden. They feed on nectar, pollen and aphid honeydew. The larvae feed on aphids and are strongly freeze tolerant with 70/ survival at - 35 ˚C. Hover fly live approximately 8 months. It´s easy to tell males and females apart. Like all other flies the males have much bigger eyes. These eyes almost touch eachother in the middle. Females have much smaller eyes.

Kjarrsveifan Syrphus ribesii er algengur og mikilvægur frjóberi oft kölluð Randafluga.

Krókusarnir eru með fyrstu vorblómunum til að byrja að blómstra og lífga óneitanlega upp á tilveruna þegar þeir opna blómin mót vorsólinni. 'Ruby Giant', er yndislega falleg tegund með nokkuð stórum, dökkfjólubláum blómum. 'Romance' er snotur gul sort. Krónublöðin eru ljósgul á ytraborði en dökkgul að innan sem er skemmtilega öðruvísi litasamsetning. Krókusar verða ekki mikið bleikari en 'Roseus'. Krónublöðin eru mjórri en á öðrum krókustegundum og blómin verða því stjörnulaga þegar þau opnast. Yndislega falleg tegund sem er í miklu uppáhaldi hjá mér. 'Tricolor' er önnur dásamlega falleg tegund með fjólubláum blómum sem eru með gulum og hvítum blómbotni. Af stórblóma vorkrókussortum má nefna 'Pickwick' með skemmtilega röndóttum blómum og 'Jeanne D'Arc' með hreinhvítum blómum. Algjör dásemd.. : http://www.gardheimar.is/fraedsla/nor...
