Other Music is the place where I've bought crazy things because this is the only place you'll find them.
Other Music, known for its dedication to underground and experimental artists, is closing after 20 years in business. We asked the co-founder Josh Madell to name 10 classic records that represent the store.
Belle and Sebastian, “If You're Feeling Sinister.” Scottish indie band that has been a huge seller for us.
J Dilla, “Donuts,” is just a classic instrumental hip-hop record. It came out a decade ago and we can still sell this one every day.
Serge Gainsbourg, “Melody Nelson.” Classic, amazing early '70s French Pop album.
Sun Ra, it's a solo piano record from a great legend.
Arthur Russell is just one of the most amazing artists ever to come out of New York. Never really got his due until the past 10 years.
These next three artists are all young New York bands who we saw through from the beginning. Vampire Weekend, we carried their self-released CD-R and when their debut album came out, they perform here in the store.
Next up is the Strokes. We carried their very earliest releases here. Finally is the National. They did an in-store here in the ‘90s. They played here again when this album came out.
Neu! They called it kraut-rock, freaky German music from this era.
Rodriguez, “Cold Fact.” We carried imported CDs of this starting from when we opened in the early '90s and has had a career resurgence in the past few years.
