How to Choose the Proper Length of Classic XC Skis (for beginners)

How long should your classic cross-country skis be?

What length of classic cross-country skis should you buy and use?

There’s no single length of classic cross-country ski that will be right for you across the broad spectrum of brands and styles. Every classic cross-country ski, whether it be designed for groomed or un-groomed terrain, features a unique weight range in which it will accommodate.

So, the proper length of a classic cross-country ski (for you) is determined primarily by your weight. And, be sure to add a few pounds to compensate for the clothing and gear you’ll be wearing.

I understand that if you're a racer, there's way more factors to consider and magic to employ in order to find your perfect length of a classic ski. However, the rule of thumb for beginner and intermediate classic xc skiers is to just choose the length of classic skis based on body weight.

All of that said, I highly recommend first determining the type of cross-country skiing you’ll be participating in during the winter. For example, will you just be cross-country skiing in the meadow near your house a few times a season? Or, are you a citizen racer who’ll be training at a groomed resort five days a week?

Generally, classic track skis will be longer (approximately 115% of your height in centimeters). On the other hand, off-track/backcountry cross-country skis will be shorter (than that 115% of your height) and available in limited sizes with wide weight ranges.

Once you’ve decided how you’ll most likely use your classic cross-country skis, search for skis that are appropriate for your intended use. Then, just pick the length of that particular ski that’s appropriate for your body weight.

Interestingly, you may need to do additional searching online for the actual weight ranges for each ski. For whatever reason, cross-country ski manufacturers don’t usually offer that information on their websites. Fortunately, many retailers do post those weight ranges online.
