Learn about folk-trio TEYR, along with exclusive performances of their folk music in this Tuesday Folk People interview. Another journey into the folk music passions, pastimes, performances and studies from the folk music circuit. Wonderfully diverse music and fascinating lives!
Who are they?
Folk trio TEYR (‘3’ in the Cornish language) combine bothy ballads, focsle shanties, folk tunes and Irish poetry. Their trademark blend of voices and instruments draws links between the many sounds of the British and Celtic Isles, as well as the Nordic countries. BBC Radio 3’s Sean Rafferty simply says “TEYR create wonderful worlds”, and we can only agree.
What do they do?
Having worked together for over a decade, the trio thrive on weaving their diverse threads together. They use close vocal harmonies, fiddle, uilleann pipes, guitar, low whistle and accordion to characterise themselves and the influences of the great folk musicians who’ve come before. A three-piece whose roots lie in a myriad of places (Cornwall, Ireland, Wales and London) but continue to develop a unique sound by mixing up a blend of traditions and modernity. Whether they are playing their own original melodies or reworked ballads, TEYR continues to push on with a distinctive sound, full of innovative and peculiar notes.
What’s their story?
Emerging out of London’s thriving session scene, TEYR has honed their craft over the years. Each member (Tommie Black-Roff, accordion, vocals; James Patrick Gavin, guitar, fiddle, vocals; and Dominic Henderson, uilleann pipes, whistle, vocals) brings their own expertise to create their unique sound. They have released two highly acclaimed studio albums (“Far From the Tree” in 2016 and their new album “Estren”, released in 2021) in which they strive to continue the living traditions of music and art, as well as highlight the themes of travel, migration and identity.
“Mixing it up to rousing effect, this accomplished trio’s intricate arrangements of uilleann pipes, accordion and guitar are in a class of their own ” —The Guardian
“Hugely impressive” — fRoots
This session premiers on the 10th of May at 8pm.
