Most often used to accompany manuscripts and art books, Mughal miniatures were small, vividly colored, and extremely detailed paintings. Even though they are so little, they are extraordinarily exact, with some lines being painted with brushes made of only one hair.
A brief blog post could never do justice to the amount of knowledge and abilities that the past masters of traditional Indian painting received from earlier generations. No way! The preparation of the paper, color, and detail are only a few of the many traditional skills that make up the distinctive appeal of Indian miniature painting, but I can also give some insights here into some helpful equipment and process I have used throughout my recent workshop of material making.
Prior to applying the tiny artwork, the paper surface must be properly prepared. Wasli paper has typically been employed. This was created of numerous layers of handcrafted paper that were adhered using a paste made of starch and polished to smooth up the surface. Smooth Hot Pressed Watercolor Paper is what I use for my artwork (300 gsm).
In order to stop paint and ink from leaking through the paper surface, burnishing is required.. For polishing the surface of paper, I used a large cowrie shell, ceramic spoon and replaced agate costly burnisher. It only takes approximately 10 to 15 minutes for the surface to feel smooth and have a delicate shine visible in the light by using slow, gentle strokes up and down, then left to right.
